The three families
35 × 45 mm (ICAO standard): UK, EU/Schengen, Australia, Japan, Korea, Pakistan, Nigeria, most of the world. 2 × 2 inch square: USA, Indian passport and visa. Larger formats: Canada 50 × 70 mm, Brazil 50 × 70 mm, Turkey 50 × 60 mm, China 33 × 48 mm.
Background colour matters
The US wants white or off-white. The UK explicitly wants light grey or cream, not white. Schengen wants light grey. India and most of Asia want white. Photograph against a plain wall in even light; the tool crops but does not recolour backgrounds.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use one photo for several countries?
Often yes, if you take a well-lit photo against a light grey wall with plenty of space around the head. Then crop it once per country with the tool; each preset uses the right ratio.
